Sleep quality of adolescents has influence on the level of attention, based on virtual-reality task.

Abstract

The sleeping problem among school-age children is a common question. Sleep problems will not only adversely affect school students’ growth and development but also affect children’s cognitive function and academic performance. The present study intends to explore the relationship between sleep and academic performance, and how attention plays a role in the process. One hundred and one valid participants from two schools took part in this study, through scales and virtual-reality task. Results indicate that adolescents in UK are having problems with the sleep quantity and sleep quality, they achieve less sleep time than the recommended and experience several sleep problems. Sleep latency on school days and sleep/wake problem behaviours both have a positive correlation with inattention and response time. A negative association between inattention and academic performance (how difficult in school and study motivation) is also demonstrated here. Evidence also supports that sleep habits can predict students’ inattention.

This research uses AULA as a key tool for their development. The researchers have used and compared different assessment instruments, to reach their conclusions.
